Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Indian cricket team, has refuted claims of secret agendas behind player selection decisions, emphasizing the transparent nature of the team environment. Despite facing criticism for strategic choices that involve leaving out key players, Gambhir maintains that tough decisions are part of his role as coach. In a recent interview with the BCCI, he described this aspect as the most challenging part of his job.
However, Gambhir stressed the importance of open communication with players in such instances when they feel disappointed for not being in the starting lineup despite deserving a spot. He highlighted the significance of honesty and directness in handling these situations.
“That’s probably the toughest part of me as a coach. That’s the toughest job I have. Sometimes, when I know that there is so much quality on the bench and I know each one of them deserves to be part of the XI, but you can ultimately pick only XI thinking about the best combination to do the job on that particular day. But, for me, the most important thing is the conversation and communication as well,” Gambhir shared with BCCI.
“The communication needs to be very clear, very honest. Obviously, sometimes, those are hard conversations to have. If you tell someone that he is not playing. That’s the toughest conversation for a coach and a player as well. Because I know that the player would get upset when he deserves to be part of the playing XI. But, if you are honest, if you are straightforward, if you know what you are saying, you are saying it straight from your heart, there is nothing beyond that,” he added.
Moreover, he criticized unfounded speculations surrounding team selections and reiterated the transparency within the team setup.
“Some players do understand that it’s a communication between a player and a coach and I think it should stay till there rather than people making a lot of hue and cry and theories about it. That’s something that this group, and the support staff have done brilliantly. It has been a very transparent dressing room and that’s how I want this dressing room to be,” Gambhir concluded.
Gambhir faced recent backlash for sitting out players like Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh, among others. Nonetheless, he has maintained a positive team atmosphere through candid discussions with the squad. India, under Gambhir’s guidance, secured a 2-1 victory over Australia in the five-match T20I series, extending their unbeaten streak in T20Is. The team’s next challenge is against South Africa in a two-match Test
