“Expert Warns Against Costly High-Risk Stock Bets”

Numerous individual investors often exhibit confidence when making substantial investments in stocks they believe they comprehend well. Yet, Abhishek Kumar, a Sebi-registered investment consultant and founder of Sahaj Money, cautions that this confidence can quickly turn into a costly error. Observing an investor proudly discussing a significant bet on a single company, Kumar felt compelled to highlight why such decisions could silently erode long-term wealth.

“This destroys 9 out of 10 portfolios,” he cautioned, pointing out that most individuals do not fully grasp the risks involved.

THE ISSUE WITH LARGE BETS

Initially, a high-quality stock that has undergone a significant decline may appear to be a lucrative opportunity. Many investors convince themselves that they are merely “buying the dip.” However, as Kumar articulated, most individuals do not genuinely comprehend the level of risk they are undertaking.

“A substantial stock position lacks diversification. It resembles a lottery ticket masquerading as a long-term investment,” he remarked. If such a stock experiences a drop of 30% or more, the emotional strain can be immense. A more substantial decline, such as 50%, could set a portfolio back years, as it necessitates a 100% gain just to recover from that loss, he elucidated.

WHEN “QUALITY” BECOMES A PITFALL

Investors frequently assume that a solid company is always a secure bet. Nevertheless, the market does not consistently reward quality at every valuation. When expectations alter, even top-performing companies can transform into burdensome long-term holdings.

“High quality does not imply buy at any cost,” Kumar cautioned. Once optimism wanes, numerous investors find themselves perplexed, questioning how a trusted brand evolved into a value trap.

CONFUSING TRADING AND INVESTING

Another common error is blending long-term investing with short-term trading practices. Many investors monitor prices daily and intend to “take profits” when a stock appreciates. This, according to Kumar, leads to emotional decision-making.

“If you are checking it daily, you are emotionally connected. Emotions erode wealth,” he emphasized. Genuine long-term investing demands patience, not constant scrutiny.
