Cristiano Ronaldo has responded to criticism from football fans regarding his absence at the funeral of his Portugal teammate, Diogo Jota. Many supporters felt that Ronaldo, being the captain and a key figure in the squad, should have attended. However, Ronaldo has clarified his decision, explaining that it was out of respect for Jota and his family, not due to negligence.
Jota and his brother, Andre Filipe, were tragically involved in an accident on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in Spain’s Zamora region. Their car experienced a tire blowout while overtaking, leading to loss of control and a fire. The news deeply impacted Portugal and the football community, resulting in an outpouring of sorrow. Several national teammates, such as Ruben Neves, Bernardo Silva, and Bruno Fernandes, paid their respects at the funeral. Ronaldo’s absence sparked discussions and speculations online.
In a discussion on Piers Morgan’s podcast, Ronaldo elaborated on his choice not to attend. He emphasized that the focus should have been on supporting the grieving family, and his presence might have diverted attention in an unwanted direction.
Describing Jota as humble and genuine, Ronaldo shared, “He is a reserved individual, not one for excessive words, very grounded. I cherished the moments I shared with him. However, it was a somber occasion. I reached out to the family to offer my support.”
Addressing online criticism, Ronaldo stated, “Criticism is abundant, but I am unfazed. When your conscience is clear, external opinions hold little significance.”
Ronaldo also disclosed a personal reason behind his decision, noting, “Since my father’s passing, I have refrained from visiting cemeteries. Additionally, my public persona tends to attract attention wherever I go. I chose not to attend to prevent unnecessary focus on myself.”
He concluded by affirming, “I am at peace with my decision. I made considerations with the family’s well-being in mind.”
