“Indian Football at a Crossroads: ISL Crisis Spurs Calls for Sustainable Growth”

Indian football faces a critical juncture with the recent developments in the Indian Super League (ISL). The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) latest tender for the league, initiated on October 16, shockingly concluded without receiving any bids.

Amidst this uncertainty, reigning champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant made a significant decision to halt all first-team operations until the situation clarifies. Meanwhile, their arch-rivals East Bengal remain cautiously optimistic, maintaining regular activities.

In a unique move, East Bengal’s senior official, Debabrata Sarkar, appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to support Indian football and assist in its revival. Sarkar emphasized that with BCCI’s backing for a few years, Indian football could progress significantly, citing the relatively small financial impact on BCCI.

Sarkar’s plea highlights the underlying truth that Indian football’s current model may be reaching its limits. The glamorous facade of the ISL, which began in 2014 promising a revolution with Bollywood owners and international stars, is now facing financial challenges and lack of sustainable growth.

In contrast, cricket, particularly the BCCI, has excelled in creating a self-sustaining sports ecosystem. The BCCI’s structured revenue sharing, media deals, and consistent investments have established a robust financial foundation from grassroots to elite levels, exemplified by the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

While the possibility of BCCI directly sponsoring football remains improbable due to differing mandates and priorities, there is an opportunity for Indian football to learn from cricket’s successful model. Implementing revenue pooling, financial safety nets for clubs, transparent media rights, and prioritizing grassroots development could reshape Indian football’s future positively.

The ISL’s challenges signify a need for a strategic shift in priorities, emphasizing sustainable growth over immediate gains. Indian football’s journey forward hinges on embracing reform and nurturing a culture that values long-term stability and club development above all else.
