Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israel will have the authority to approve foreign forces’ participation in a proposed international mission in Gaza, as part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to maintain a delicate ceasefire. Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s sovereignty in security matters and reiterated that they will determine which international forces are acceptable. The United States has affirmed its support for this approach.
The involvement of Arab and other nations in committing troops to the mission remains uncertain due to Hamas’s reluctance to disarm as stipulated in the plan. Israel has also raised concerns about the composition of the multinational force. While the U.S. has ruled out sending its troops to Gaza, discussions have been underway with countries like Indonesia, the UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Azerbaijan to contribute to the mission.
Israel, which imposed a blockade on Gaza for two years following a cross-border attack by Hamas in 2023, continues to control access to the territory. Recently, Netanyahu expressed opposition to Turkish forces joining the mission, reflecting the strained relations between Israel and Turkey post the Gaza conflict.
During a visit to Israel to support the ceasefire, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed the importance of the multinational force including countries that Israel is comfortable with. Rubio hinted at possible discussions with Qatar, a key mediator, regarding a UN resolution or international agreement to authorize the force. The major obstacle to Trump’s plan is Hamas’s refusal to disarm, leading to ongoing challenges in the region.
Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s independence in security decisions and emphasized the partnership with the U.S., rejecting claims of policy dictation. Diplomats highlighted Trump’s role in convincing Netanyahu to accept the peace framework, apologize to Qatar’s leader, and facilitate Arab states’ pressure on Hamas to release Israeli hostages, pivotal in resolving the conflict.
