India has expressed its support for the recent Gaza Peace Agreement, highlighting the importance of diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump. During the UN Security Council Open Debate on the Middle East situation, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, emphasized the country’s backing for a two-state solution as the key to achieving lasting peace in the region.
Harish acknowledged the positive outcomes of the Sharm el-Sheikh summit and the significance of the Peace Agreement signed on October 13. India thanked Russia for convening the Open Debate and recognized the pivotal role played by the United States, particularly President Trump, in facilitating the Agreement. The contributions of Egypt and Qatar were also commended in reaching this milestone.
India reiterated its stance that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for sustainable peace, emphasizing the need for all parties to fulfill their obligations. The country has consistently condemned terrorism, advocated for the protection of civilians, and stressed the importance of humanitarian aid to Gaza. India stands firm in supporting the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and sees the two-state solution as the most viable path forward.
Highlighting India’s long-standing support for Palestine, Harish mentioned the country’s recognition of the State of Palestine in 1988. India continues to advocate for a sovereign and independent Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel within secure borders. The commitment to Palestine is reflected in India’s development partnership, with over $170 million in support provided, including ongoing projects and humanitarian aid.
Regarding Syria, Harish emphasized the humanitarian challenges and India’s commitment to providing essential aid to the Syrian people. He reiterated India’s support for a Syrian-led political process and regional efforts towards a lasting solution. India also paid tribute to its troops serving in UN peacekeeping missions, including the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria.
Addressing the situations in Lebanon and Yemen, Harish underlined India’s commitment to UN peacekeeping operations and the safety of peacekeepers. He expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and stressed the importance of humanitarian assistance reaching all civilians regardless of their affiliations. Harish concluded by emphasizing the significance of peace in Palestine and the broader region for India’s vision of a stable and peaceful Middle East.
