Online frauds are becoming increasingly common on the internet, with reports emerging almost daily of Indians falling victim to scams and losing significant amounts of money. Various types of scams are prevalent, including digital arrest scams, pending utility bill scams related to services like electricity and gas, distressing messages about relatives in danger, and urgent requests to correct address details. While it may seem easy to spot warning signs in scam calls, the reality is that scammers employ tactics to deceive and ensnare unsuspecting individuals.
Recently, we encountered a suspicious WhatsApp message that claimed a gas connection provided by Maharashtra Natural Gas Distribution Limited (MNGL) would be disconnected if the last payment was not updated by 9 pm. The message instructed the recipient to contact a person named Devesh Joshi for assistance. However, the message raised several red flags due to its poor quality, including spelling and punctuation errors, lack of specific account details, and being forwarded from an unknown number without proper credentials.
Despite the dubious nature of the message, we decided to investigate further by contacting Devesh Joshi. Interestingly, a previous report had linked a person by the same name to a similar scam. When we reached out to the individual, they immediately offered assistance without verifying our identity or questioning discrepancies in the information provided. The scammer instructed us to update our account details through an APK file named “Gas Bill Update,” emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Upon attempting to install the app, our phone’s security features, such as Google Play Protect, flagged the APK as potentially harmful, preventing its installation. Subsequent interactions with the scammer revealed their persistence in bypassing security measures and accessing sensitive information on the device. Despite their efforts, we refrained from proceeding with the installation, recognizing the potential risks involved.
The scammer’s demeanor changed when faced with our reluctance, resorting to abusive language and threats upon realizing our suspicions. This encounter highlighted the importance of vigilance and skepticism towards urgent requests for personal information or downloads from unknown sources. Scammers often exploit people’s concerns and create a sense of urgency to manipulate them into divulging sensitive details or compromising their device’s security.
It is crucial to remain cautious and attentive to red flags in any communication involving financial transactions or personal data. By scrutinizing messages for inconsistencies, refraining from downloading suspicious files, and heeding security warnings on devices, individuals can safeguard themselves against falling prey to digital scams. This incident serves as a reminder of the evolving tactics employed by scammers and the need for heightened awareness to protect against fraudulent activities.
