US President Donald Trump responded to reports on Tuesday regarding his request for $230 million from the Justice Department to cover legal expenses related to federal investigations. Trump clarified that he did not initiate the request but stated that any awarded funds would be donated to charity.
According to The New York Times, Trump is seeking compensation from the Justice Department for what he perceives as politically motivated investigations against him. Trump emphasized that he does not engage in discussions about the matter with his lawyers and indicated a willingness to donate any money received to charity.
Trump, who attempted to challenge his defeat in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden based on unfounded claims of voter fraud, now holds a significant position in the government that previously scrutinized him over the election-related allegations.
The reported administrative claims filed by Trump include challenges to the FBI and US special counsel’s investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and potential ties between his campaign and Russia. Additionally, another claim accuses the FBI of privacy violations during a search at Mar-a-Lago and accuses the Justice Department of malicious prosecution concerning classified documents.
Responding to inquiries about potential conflicts in reviewing Trump’s claims, Justice Department spokesperson Chad Gilmartin emphasized that all officials within the department adhere to the guidance provided by career ethics officials in any situation.
