India’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, emphasized that the issue of Khalistani groups in Canada is a matter for Ottawa to handle domestically, not for India. In an exclusive interview with CTV’s Question Period, Patnaik dismissed claims connecting Indian diplomats to unlawful activities as “unfounded and illogical.”
Patnaik highlighted that recent discussions between Ottawa and New Delhi have centered on overall security concerns, including the presence and impact of Khalistani groups. He stated, “We are currently addressing various security challenges within this country.”
Regarding the Khalistan matter, the envoy stressed that it is not solely India’s responsibility but a shared concern with Canada. He stated, “Canada should not view this issue as solely an Indian concern. It is a Canadian problem, created by individuals within Canada.”
Expressing his frustration, Patnaik mentioned the need for personal security due to reported threats from Khalistani extremists. He remarked, “It is concerning that a high commissioner in this country requires security protection. I should not need protection in a nation like this.”
Patnaik also underlined the importance of mutual security cooperation, emphasizing that discussions between both countries encompass the safety of Canadians in India. This sentiment was echoed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2023 when he defended Canada’s approach to dealing with Khalistani groups.
In response to recent developments, including a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India, issues of public safety and the necessity for independent legal investigations were raised. The Sikh Federation of Canada criticized Ottawa for allegedly leveraging community safety for diplomatic purposes.
Tensions between India and Canada escalated in 2023 following accusations of Indian involvement in criminal activities on Canadian soil. However, India has consistently denied these claims, with Patnaik stating that India is still awaiting evidence to support these allegations.
Patnaik assured that India does not engage in extraterritorial actions and emphasized efforts to rebuild bilateral relations through enhanced security dialogues. Additionally, Canadian officials have engaged in constructive talks with their Indian counterparts on shared security concerns.
On the matter of the return of Indian diplomats to Canada, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Canadians while fostering trust in bilateral relations. He also highlighted Canada’s commitment to holding those responsible for criminal activities to account.
In conclusion, ongoing discussions and efforts are being made to address security challenges and strengthen relations between India and Canada.
