WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to add personalized tags next to their names in group chats. This feature, currently available for beta testers on Android, lets users assign custom tags of up to 30 characters to help identify roles or personalities within the group, such as “Coach” or “Project Manager.”
Unlike usernames or display names, these tags are optional and managed by individual members rather than group admins, aiming to provide context without hierarchy. Users can create, edit, or delete their tags at any time, with a limit of 30 characters and restrictions on special symbols, links, or checkmarks to maintain clarity and prevent impersonation.
Each tag is specific to the group where it is created, ensuring that labels like “Project Manager” only appear within the designated chat. Even if users switch devices or reinstall WhatsApp, the tags remain visible as long as they log in with the same account. While currently limited to beta users, the feature is expected to expand after thorough testing to ensure seamless synchronization across devices.
To add or edit a group-member tag, users can simply navigate to the Group Info screen in a group chat on WhatsApp for Android, tap on their name in the members’ list, and enter their desired label, such as “Designer” or “Foodie.” Once saved, the tag will be visible to all group members. Although exclusive to beta users for now, WhatsApp typically introduces new features gradually, hinting at a broader release on Android and later on iOS.
This update aligns with WhatsApp’s efforts to enhance group communication by introducing personalized features like member tags alongside existing functionalities such as Communities and Admin Controls. For users navigating multiple busy group chats, these tags could be the key to bringing order and clarity to the conversation.
