A tragic bus crash in the northeastern state of Pernambuco claimed the lives of at least 15 individuals on Friday night. According to Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, the driver lost control of the bus, leading to the fatal incident.
The accident occurred just before 8 pm when the bus driver veered into the opposite lane, hit rocks along the highway, and ultimately overturned after colliding with a sand embankment. The Federal Highway Police are currently investigating the underlying causes of the crash.
Reports indicate that out of the 30 passengers on board, half have been confirmed deceased, with 11 women and four men among the casualties. The exact number of injured individuals has not been disclosed at this time.
Fortunately, the driver only sustained minor injuries. Following the accident, a breathalyser test was conducted, showing a normal result. Authorities suspect that some passengers may not have been wearing seat belts when the tragedy unfolded.
