India’s cricketers Karun Nair and Ajinkya Rahane have voiced their disappointment towards chief selector Ajit Agarkar for overlooking them in the Indian Test team. Rahane, a former India captain, has been absent from Test matches since the 2023 West Indies tour, while Nair faced exclusion after just one Test series following his return against England.
Nair, showcasing his prowess with a remarkable 174-run innings for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy against Goa, expressed his frustration with the selection committee. He emphasized feeling let down after delivering consistently in domestic cricket for the past two years, expecting more opportunities at the international level.
Acknowledging the impact of such rejections on one’s mindset, Nair admitted to feeling disheartened, questioning his future goals without representing his country. Despite the setbacks, he remained focused on performing well and contributing to his team’s success on the field.
In response to queries about Nair’s omission, Agarkar hinted at a shift away from the player due to perceived inadequacies during the England series. Similarly, Rahane, known for his pivotal role in India’s Test triumph in Australia in 2020–21, criticized the selectors for overlooking him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 squad.
Rahane emphasized that age should not be a decisive factor, advocating for consideration based on experience, dedication, and performance rather than age alone. The seasoned cricketer’s leadership in Kohli’s absence led to a historic series victory in Australia, showcasing his value beyond mere numbers.
As Nair and Rahane express their discontent, the debate surrounding selection criteria and player recognition continues within the Indian cricketing community.
