Omar Abdullah Urges Prompt Restoration of J&K Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah subtly criticized the Centre, emphasizing the need for the prompt restoration of statehood. He highlighted that the Modi government did not tie the restoration of statehood to the BJP’s return to power and urged them to fulfill their commitment. Abdullah made these remarks during a press conference at the National Conference Party office in Jammu.

Reflecting on his government’s achievements, Abdullah highlighted the progress in development and the efforts made to fulfill electoral promises. He emphasized that his government had worked diligently to expedite the development process. Abdullah mentioned this ahead of the Nagrota bypolls and Rajya Sabha elections.

Abdullah insisted on being evaluated based on his full term in office, as he was elected for a five-year tenure. He expressed optimism for broader opposition unity in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, hoping for support from Mehbooba Mufti’s party for their candidates in the elections scheduled for October 24.

The Chief Minister also questioned Sajjad Lone’s alliance decisions, particularly his support for the BJP. He described the Rajya Sabha elections as a key indicator of party alignments in the state, emphasizing the importance of determining support for the BJP. Sajad Lone, the People’s Conference chief, responded by cautioning Abdullah against labeling those who do not back the National Conference’s candidates.

Abdullah discussed the seat-sharing arrangements for the Rajya Sabha polls, stating that they had offered a seat to the Congress, which sought a safe seat instead. The National Conference decided to contest all four vacant Rajya Sabha seats after failing to reach an agreement with the Congress. Abdullah had earlier pointed out the challenges the BJP might face in securing seats without resorting to unethical practices, given its limited representation in the 90-member house.

He concluded by mentioning ongoing discussions with the Congress regarding the Nagrota bypolls and potential collaboration. Abdullah highlighted the importance of dialogue with the Congress for a possible understanding in the byelections and emphasized the need for cooperation.
