Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor, announced his intention to embrace his Muslim identity more openly in response to what he deemed as “racist and unfounded” attacks from former Governor Andrew Cuomo and his supporters.
Speaking outside a mosque in the Bronx, surrounded by imams and community leaders, Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, became emotional as he highlighted the fear and humiliation experienced by Muslim New Yorkers since the events of 9/11, including his own family members.
“After September 11, my aunt refrained from using the subway because she felt unsafe wearing a headscarf,” Mamdani shared with tears in his eyes. “These are the lessons many Muslim New Yorkers have learned. And recently, Andrew Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, and Eric Adams have reinforced these lessons,” he added.
Mamdani, known for his Democratic Socialist views and as one of the most progressive candidates in the city’s Democratic primary, has been criticized for his stance on Israel and Palestine. However, the recent attacks from Cuomo’s camp and other opponents have been condemned by Democrats who accuse the former governor of promoting Islamophobia, as reported by the Associated Press.
‘No More’: Mamdani’s Emotional Response
Mamdani clarified that his reaction was not aimed at political adversaries but at fellow Muslims who feel marginalized.
“Every Muslim dreams of being treated equally to any other New Yorker,” he expressed. “For too long, we have been advised to settle for less and be content with whatever little we are given. This ends now,” Mamdani asserted, regretting his initial decision to downplay his faith during the campaign.
“I believed that by behaving appropriately or suppressing my identity, I would be seen beyond just my religion,” Mamdani reflected. “I was mistaken. No matter how much I redirected attention, it was never sufficient.”
“I will not compromise my identity or beliefs for the faith I proudly adhere to,” he continued. “I refuse to hide in the shadows any longer. I will embrace myself openly,” Mamdani declared.
‘Racist and Unfounded’: The Heightened Situation
During an appearance on a conservative radio program, Cuomo laughed as the host insinuated that Mamdani would support another 9/11 attack. Cuomo responded, “That’s another issue,” to the comment.
Subsequently, a video was briefly posted by a Cuomo campaign account, showing Mamdani eating rice with his hands while falsely labeling his supporters as criminals. The video was later taken down with the spokesperson attributing it to an error.
At a different event, Mayor Eric Adams, in conjunction with Cuomo, cautioned against New York resembling Europe and vaguely suggested a higher risk of terror incidents under Mamdani’s leadership.
