Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has been advised by former fast bowler Zaheer Khan to trust his natural instincts and play freely to reclaim his T20I form. Gill, who currently serves as the vice-captain of the T20I team, has struggled with just 57 runs in the ongoing T20I series in Australia.
After a hiatus from India’s T20I squad, Gill made a comeback during the Asia Cup and was promoted as vice-captain following a successful stint in England. His return pushed Sanju Samson out of the opener position, despite Samson’s impressive partnership with Abhishek Sharma.
Gill’s performance in the Asia Cup was inconsistent, with only 127 runs in seven matches at an average of 21.16. While his position may not be immediately threatened, a lack of impact in the remaining series matches could raise concerns.
Seen training rigorously at Carrara Oval in Gold Coast, Gill engaged in intense discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Zaheer Khan emphasized the importance of playing with freedom and avoiding overthinking about innings construction, urging Gill to trust his instincts for better results.
As a player earmarked for potential captaincy across formats, Gill faces high expectations and must adapt swiftly to India’s aggressive T20I strategy to solidify his place in the team. Former India captain Kris Srikkanth criticized the team management for Gill’s vice-captaincy, citing his inconsistency as a disruptor to the team’s balance.
Gill aims to silence critics and secure his spot in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
