“Virat Kohli Eyed for Big Bash League; Ashwin Makes BBL History”

Cricket Australia’s CEO, Todd Greenberg, envisions the possibility of Virat Kohli participating in the Big Bash League (BBL) in the future, contingent on the league’s openness to private investment. Kohli is set to make his final international appearance in Australia during Saturday’s ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, having already retired from Test and T20 cricket. While Kohli’s farewell garners attention, another significant development is the signing of Ravichandran Ashwin for a full season with the Sydney Thunder, making him the first Indian cricketer to join the BBL.

As Cricket Australia explores the potential for private investment in the BBL, the signing of Ashwin is seen as a pivotal moment for Indian players in foreign leagues. Currently, Indian players can only participate in overseas franchise leagues after retirement from international and domestic cricket, including stepping away from the IPL. However, with IPL franchise owners expanding globally, the landscape may evolve to allow more opportunities for Indian players.

Greenberg expressed optimism about Kohli’s future involvement in the BBL, emphasizing the importance of attracting top talent to elevate the league’s status. He highlighted the ongoing discussions about privatization, aiming to position the BBL as the second most prominent T20 competition globally. Additionally, Cricket Australia has secured agreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board, enabling stars like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Haris Rauf to feature in this year’s BBL.

In a bid to enhance community engagement, Greenberg introduced the “Six-a-Side Smash Series,” a fast-paced and accessible cricket initiative. While the idea of Kohli playing in the BBL remains a cherished aspiration, the potential for his participation could materialize as Cricket Australia progresses towards privatization.
