“UIDAI to Launch Home-Based Aadhaar Updates”

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to introduce new digital self-update functionalities via the official Aadhaar app. This upcoming feature will enable Aadhaar cardholders to conveniently update their mobile numbers and residential addresses from the comfort of their homes. The primary goal is to eliminate the necessity of physically visiting enrolment centers, which typically involves paperwork, queues, and extended waiting periods.

Presently, updating critical Aadhaar details such as mobile numbers and addresses mandates a personal visit to an Aadhaar center due to rigorous verification protocols. This requirement has presented challenges for many individuals, especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those residing in remote or rural areas where access to Aadhaar centers is limited. By transitioning to a home-based digital update system, UIDAI aims to enhance accessibility, speed, and convenience in an otherwise arduous process.

UIDAI shared the forthcoming features through various posts, confirming that both mobile number and address updates will soon be achievable using digital authentication through the Aadhaar app. In its communication to users, the authority stated, “Update your address conveniently from home. No more queuing at the Aadhaar Center. Coming soon, stay tuned.”

Previously, the Aadhaar governing body had announced a similar update regarding mobile number changes, highlighting that the feature would utilize OTP verification and face authentication to securely validate a user’s identity.

The new update system on the Aadhaar app will employ a two-step verification process to ensure robust security. Initially, users will receive a one-time password (OTP) on their existing or new mobile number to initiate the update. Subsequently, users will undergo face authentication via the app, allowing UIDAI to digitally verify their live facial data against the existing Aadhaar records. This approach eradicates the need for physical documentation and center-based verification while maintaining the security of the update process.

UIDAI has designed this feature to be seamless and user-friendly, enabling Aadhaar holders to update their details by simply entering their Aadhaar number, choosing their preferred language, verifying the OTP, and completing face authentication. Additionally, users will be required to set up a six-digit security PIN to secure their Aadhaar profile within the app, adding an extra layer of protection.

While these features are not yet operational, UIDAI encourages Aadhaar cardholders to download the Aadhaar app on Android or iOS in preparation for the forthcoming rollout. The authority assures that digital updates are “rolling out soon” and advises users to stay alert for further announcements and guidance.
