“Trump Touts Tariffs for Global Peace, Mistakenly Mentions India-Iran”

In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump seemed to mistakenly associate India with Iran while discussing his use of tariffs to prevent a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan. Trump has frequently claimed that his imposition of tariffs has averted wars, asserting that his trade strategies contributed to the resolution of “five or six” out of “eight wars” during his time in office.

During a press briefing at the White House, Trump defended his trade policies by highlighting a 100% tariff stance, emphasizing that tariffs were crucial for national defense and maintaining a strong position in international trade relations. He expressed a firm belief that tariffs played a pivotal role in global peacekeeping efforts and conflict resolution.

Trump’s remarks appeared to blur the distinction between India and Iran as he referenced negotiations with Iran while recounting an incident involving Pakistan. He recounted a scenario where he allegedly intervened in a potential conflict between Pakistan and Iran, leveraging the threat of a 200% tariff imposition and trade restrictions to de-escalate tensions quickly, claiming to have averted a nuclear war within 24 hours.

Furthermore, Trump reiterated an assertion that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had commended him for preventing a nuclear confrontation between India and Pakistan, citing Sharif’s gratitude for averting a crisis that could have resulted in significant casualties. Trump recounted Sharif’s acknowledgment of his role in diffusing tensions and preventing a dire situation from escalating into a full-blown conflict.

At a peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Shehbaz Sharif publicly lauded Trump’s efforts in preventing a potential nuclear conflict and went as far as nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sharif praised Trump’s dedication to peace-building initiatives and credited him with fostering a more stable and harmonious global environment.

Throughout his discourse, Trump staunchly defended his utilization of tariffs as a mechanism for promoting stability on a global scale, attributing the resolution of multiple conflicts to his tariff policies. Despite drawing attention for his apparent mix-up between India and Iran, Trump’s assertions have not been substantiated by verifiable evidence, with India clarifying that agreements on ceasing hostilities with Pakistan were achieved through direct military discussions.

India and Pakistan reached a mutual understanding on May 10 to de-escalate tensions following a period of heightened cross-border military activities, emphasizing the significance of direct engagement between military officials in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
