“RBI Proposes Weekly Credit Score Updates for Borrowers”

Starting April 2026, borrowers may experience quicker updates to their credit scores, as per a new proposal by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The RBI aims to enhance the responsiveness of credit reports to reflect recent financial behavior more promptly.

Under the proposed draft rules, credit scores are expected to be refreshed every seven days, a significant improvement from the current bi-monthly cycle. The RBI’s draft “Credit Information Reporting (1st Amendment) Directions, 2025” seeks to revamp how credit data is reported and updated.

The proposal mandates that all Credit Information Companies (CICs) update borrower data five times a month on specific dates. Banks and NBFCs will provide a full set of credit records monthly, with incremental updates in between for any changes in borrower details or loan status.

Banks will submit the full list of borrower accounts by the third day of the following month, and for weekly updates, they will only send new activity updates. This means that changes like closing a credit card, paying off a loan, or improving repayment records could reflect in credit reports within days.

The new system introduces accountability measures, requiring prompt data submission by banks to avoid delays flagged by CICs on the RBI’s monitoring portal.

This real-time update system is beneficial for borrowers as it can lead to faster credit score improvements, quicker loan approvals, enhanced credit card eligibility assessments, fairer interest rates, and shorter recovery times for those rebuilding credit. For lenders and CICs, this system means tighter timelines and increased responsibility to ensure accurate and timely credit reporting for millions of borrowers and lenders.

With credit scores updating weekly, borrowers may have immediate access to loans, credit cards, and favorable interest rates more closely aligned with their recent financial behavior.
