Pornhub Seeks Device-Level Age Verification

Following the implementation of stringent age-verification laws in the US and UK, Pornhub has observed a significant decline in user traffic on its platform. The company reports an up to 80% decrease in site visits in affected areas due to regulations mandating adult websites to restrict access for users who fail to provide valid IDs for age verification. In response, Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, has approached tech giants like Google and Microsoft, urging them to develop alternative age-verification methods integrated directly into devices to address the inadequacies of the current regulatory framework.

In communications to Google and Microsoft, Aylo’s chief legal officer, Anthony Penhale, emphasized the company’s support for safeguarding minors online while criticizing the current age-verification mechanisms. Penhale highlighted the flaws and counterproductive nature of site-based age verification and the risks associated with third-party verification systems that entail sharing sensitive user data without adequate protection.

Aylo contends that the complex regulatory environment for age verification has led to operational challenges and privacy concerns, citing a recent breach involving a major verification provider as evidence of the dangers of storing IDs and biometric data externally. Pornhub notes a visible impact of these laws, as users are shifting to alternative adult sites with fewer restrictions, raising concerns about safety and compliance.

Advocating for a streamlined approach, Pornhub proposes that tech giants develop device-level age verification. Under this proposal, devices like phones, tablets, and computers would authenticate a user’s age once, transmitting this information securely to websites and applications through an API. The company asserts that such a system would mitigate data-sharing risks and establish a consistent compliance standard. However, privacy experts caution that this approach may lead to a universal digital ID, raising concerns about surveillance and anonymity.

Pornhub stresses the necessity of a coordinated global strategy, stating that safeguarding minors from accessing adult content requires a worldwide solution. The company advocates for starting devices as child-safe and providing access to adult content only after age verification. Aylo argues that device-level verification could offer a more secure and privacy-centric alternative to site-based checks, contingent on the willingness of tech giants to implement it.
