A street in New York City has undergone an official name change to honor Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, recognizing his legacy of sacrifice, compassion, and staunch defense of human rights. This decision has been widely celebrated by Sikh communities in the United States and India as a significant step towards acknowledging Sikh heritage on a global scale.
The intersection of 114th Street and 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, Queens, which is the location of the historic Gurdwara Makhan Shah Lubana, will now be referred to as Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way. The New York City Council approved this change earlier this year, and a special renaming ceremony took place over the weekend before Diwali.
NYC Council Member Lynn Schulman, who initiated the resolution for the renaming, emphasized that this gesture pays tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur’s timeless message of tolerance and selfless service. The event was attended by local Sikh leaders and community members, featuring traditional prayers and cultural performances that highlighted the vibrant Sikh presence in Richmond Hill, often known as “Little Punjab.”
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri described the renaming as a proud moment for Sikhs globally, emphasizing the significance of the Sikh community in Richmond Hill and its contribution to the cultural diversity of New York City. Puri also underscored the universal message of equality and courage embodied by Guru Tegh Bahadur, who is revered for his sacrifice in championing religious freedom and resisting oppression in the 17th century.
The renaming ceremony coincided with Diwali celebrations across the Indian-American community in the United States. In New York City, various cultural events were held, including special prayers and light displays at local temples, gurdwaras, and community organizations. Meanwhile, in Washington, US President Donald Trump participated in Diwali celebrations by lighting lamps at the White House, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and expressing admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the strong ties between the two nations.
