“National Anthem Controversy: Assam Congress Accused of ‘Greater Bangladesh’ Agenda”

A controversy has erupted in Assam following the singing of Bangladesh’s national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” at a Congress gathering in Karimganj district. The ruling BJP in the state has accused the Congress of pursuing a “Greater Bangladesh” agenda for political gain.

The incident occurred during a Congress Seva Dal meeting in Sribhumi town, and a video of the event has gone viral, sparking widespread criticism online. Assam Minister Ashok Singhal shared the video, condemning the Congress for allowing the singing of a national anthem from a country seeking to separate northeastern India.

The BJP unit in Assam labeled the Congress as “Bangladesh-obsessed,” citing recent events where Bangladesh presented a map including the entire northeast region and the Congress proudly singing the Bangladeshi anthem. The BJP called attention to what they perceive as a concerning agenda at play.

Social media backlash ensued, with calls for action against the Congress. Users expressed outrage, with some labeling the act as treason and urging swift government intervention. Others criticized the Congress for allegedly aligning with anti-national sentiments and accused them of attempting to transform Assam into Bangladesh.

In response to the controversy, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi defended the party, accusing the BJP of disrespecting Bengali culture and language. He highlighted past instances where the BJP allegedly insulted the people of Bengal. Gogoi emphasized that the anthem sung at the meeting was composed by Rabindranath Tagore and represents Bengali culture.

The unfolding situation has generated significant attention and debate on social media platforms, with contrasting views on the motivations and implications of the Congress’s actions.

This incident underscores the deep-rooted political tensions and ideologies in the region, fueling further discourse and scrutiny among the public and political factions.
