“India’s Coach Backs Suryakumar Despite Form Concerns”

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has shown faith in captain Suryakumar Yadav despite the batter’s recent struggles in T20I matches. Despite facing difficulties in the past month with only two half-centuries and continuous single-digit scores in the last year, Suryakumar had previously reached the top spot in the T20I rankings.

Despite Suryakumar’s individual form challenges, India has seen remarkable success under his leadership, dominating bilateral series and clinching the Asia Cup title in September, where their performance outshone all other teams.

As India prepares for their upcoming T20I match against Australia, Gambhir expressed his lack of concern regarding Suryakumar’s form, emphasizing the team’s dedication to an aggressive play style.

Gambhir stated, “I’m not worried about Surya’s batting form as we have adopted an ultra-aggressive approach within our squad. Embracing this mindset means that setbacks are part of the journey. While Surya could opt for a safer 40 runs off 30 balls to avoid criticism, we collectively agree that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing our aggressive strategy.”

He also highlighted the strength of India’s batting lineup by praising Abhishek Sharma’s consistent performance over the past year. Gambhir mentioned, “Abhishek has been in great form, maintaining it throughout the Asia Cup. Once Surya rediscovers his touch, he will step up as needed. In T20 cricket, our focus is not solely on individual scores but on the style of cricket we aim to play. Despite potential batting failures due to our aggressive approach, the overall impact holds more significance than mere runs.”

India is gearing up for a five-match T20I series against Australia as part of their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026, followed by matches against South Africa and New Zealand before hosting the tournament.
