“India Pursues Trade Deals Amid Tariffs, Embraces Atmanirbharta Vision”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed that active efforts are underway to finalize trade agreements with the United States and the European Union. During an event in Mumbai, she highlighted that negotiations are ongoing, with India eagerly anticipating the outcomes. Notably, these discussions are occurring amidst the United States imposing significant 50% punitive tariffs on Indian exports.

In addition, Sitharaman emphasized that India’s economic approach of atmanirbharta (self-reliance) does not signify isolation but rather emphasizes the importance of being self-sufficient while maintaining strong connections within global trade and supply networks.

Addressing the gathering, Sitharaman clarified that atmanirbharta should not be misconstrued as isolationism. She stressed that it embodies a resilient interdependence, allowing the country to fulfill domestic requirements while integrating with global value chains.

She elaborated that Atmanirbhar Bharat aims to establish India as a hub for creation, innovation, and production, catering not only to its citizens but to the global market. This vision is built on pillars of self-assurance, entrepreneurship, empathy, and accountability, incorporating economic growth, cutting-edge technology, social welfare, and environmental consciousness, all aimed at positioning India as a developed nation by 2047.

The minister outlined five main focus areas of India’s self-reliance mission, encompassing economic, social, technological, strategic, and energy self-reliance. These dimensions are crucial in propelling India towards becoming a robust, secure, and forward-looking economy on the global stage.

Sitharaman underscored that the foundation for Atmanirbhar Bharat was laid in 2014, well before the concept gained widespread recognition. She emphasized the acceleration of efforts to fortify the nation internally while fostering partnerships globally, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, innovation, and international trade relations.
