Apple has introduced a new feature to its Watch lineup to address the widespread issue of hypertension, a condition that impacts over 1.4 billion people globally, with nearly 40% of them being unaware of their condition. This new hypertension notification feature is now being launched in India following regulatory approvals. The feature is available on Watch Series 9 and newer models, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer versions.
The hypertension notifications feature is designed to alert users if indications of chronic high blood pressure are detected. It utilizes specific algorithms to monitor data captured by the optical heart sensor on the Apple Watch. By analyzing how a user’s blood vessels respond to heartbeats over a period of 30 days, the Watch will notify users if consistent signs of hypertension are identified.
Dr. Adam Phillips, a cardiologist at Apple, emphasized the importance of this feature in detecting asymptomatic hypertension, a condition that often goes undiagnosed for years. The feature has undergone rigorous development and clinical validation processes to minimize false positives. Apple aims to notify over a million users in the first year alone.
In India, where hypertension is prevalent, with reports indicating that one in every third individual may have the condition, this feature could be particularly beneficial. Despite its name, the Hypertension Notification feature does not provide real-time blood pressure monitoring like traditional cuff machines. Users need to set up the feature in the Health app, providing essential details such as age. Only users aged 22 and above can utilize this feature, and it is not intended for individuals already diagnosed with hypertension and undergoing treatment.
If hypertension is detected, the Watch will prompt users to undergo further testing and monitor their blood pressure at home using a standard blood pressure machine. This proactive approach aims to empower users to take actionable steps towards managing their health effectively.
