Apple is reportedly testing a new feature for macOS called Edge Light, which functions as a built-in ring light around the edges of a Mac’s screen to enhance video call quality. This feature aims to improve the appearance of users during online meetings or video calls, especially in dimly lit settings.
The Edge Light, currently in beta, is set to be introduced in macOS 26.2. It acts as a virtual ring light by illuminating the perimeter of the Mac display. Users can customize the brightness and tone of the Edge Light, choosing warmer or cooler hues according to their preferences.
Utilizing the Apple Neural Engine and the Mac’s Image Signal Processor, Edge Light can detect the user’s face, size, and position within the camera frame for precise lighting adjustments. Additionally, the image signal processor can optimize brightness based on the specific environment, enhancing the user’s appearance on video calls.
Moreover, Edge Light is designed to interact responsively with users. When the cursor approaches the screen edge, the illumination effect temporarily recedes, allowing uninterrupted interaction with content near the display edge.
This feature is compatible with Mac models powered by Apple Silicon, specifically the M-series chipsets. Users of Macs released from 2024 onwards can enable Edge Light to automatically activate in low-light conditions, ensuring a seamless experience without manual intervention.
Edge Light can be accessed alongside other macOS video conferencing features like Portrait mode, Studio Light, virtual backgrounds, and Voice Isolation. It is compatible with major video conferencing applications such as FaceTime, Zoom, and WebEx, ensuring users can benefit from Edge Light across various platforms.
Furthermore, Edge Light support extends to the Studio Display and external cameras. This feature builds upon concepts introduced by other manufacturers, such as HP’s Enhanced Lighting in 2021.
