The African Union (AU) has taken the decision to suspend Madagascar from all its activities in response to a recent coup that led to the removal of President Andry Rajoelina. The country’s military leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, is set to be sworn in as the new president following a period of political unrest and public demonstrations.
The suspension of Madagascar from the AU was confirmed promptly after an emergency meeting of the bloc’s Peace and Security Council, denouncing the unconstitutional change in government. The AU emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law over the use of force, as stated by African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in Addis Ababa.
This suspension carries significant political implications for Madagascar, including the loss of participation rights in continental gatherings and the potential severance of aid and trade relationships with other member nations. Colonel Randrianirina, a key figure in the CAPSAT army unit, announced the military’s assumption of control over the country, dissolving most political bodies except for the lower house of parliament.
Randrianirina indicated that the army-led administration plans to govern for a transitional period of up to two years before organizing new elections. His unit’s involvement in the 2009 coup that brought President Rajoelina to power highlights his historical significance in Madagascar’s political landscape. President Rajoelina, who fled the country amid the recent events, is currently reported to be in Dubai after leaving Madagascar on a French military aircraft. Despite facing criticism for unfulfilled promises of development and anti-corruption efforts during his tenure, Rajoelina has refused to formally relinquish power, denouncing the military’s actions as an illegal seizure.
Madagascar, once a French colony, continues to grapple with political instability and poverty despite its abundant natural resources. Approximately 75% of its population of 30 million people live below the poverty line, underscoring the ongoing challenges facing the nation.
