Amazon to Invest $35 Billion in India by 2030

Amazon has revealed plans to invest over $35 billion in its various operations in India by 2030, showcasing a deepened commitment to the country’s digital economy, artificial intelligence advancements, and job creation. This substantial investment follows an already impressive $40 billion that Amazon has injected into India in the last 15 years. The announcement was made during the sixth edition of the Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi on December 10, coinciding with the publication of an economic impact report by consulting firm Keystone Strategy.

According to the report, Amazon’s cumulative investments, inclusive of infrastructure development and employee compensation, have solidified its position as the largest foreign investor in India, a key facilitator of e-commerce exports, and among the top contributors to job creation in the nation. The company outlined that its upcoming investments will focus on three key strategic pillars: AI-powered digitalization, boosting export activities, and fostering job growth, aligning with India’s overarching digital and economic objectives.

Amazon highlighted its significant investments in both physical and digital infrastructure across India, including the establishment of fulfillment centers, robust transportation networks, cutting-edge data centers, digital payment infrastructure, and innovative technology platforms. As per the Keystone report, Amazon has successfully digitized over 12 million small businesses, facilitated $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, and sustained approximately 2.8 million diverse job roles in various industries in 2024.

These job opportunities span across technology, operations, logistics, and customer support, providing competitive salaries, healthcare benefits, and formal training to employees. Amazon’s economic impact extends beyond its direct workforce, fostering employment in packaging, logistics, manufacturing, and technology services. Furthermore, it empowers numerous small entrepreneurs to expand their businesses nationally and globally through its marketplace.

Looking ahead to 2030, Amazon aims to create an additional 1 million direct and indirect jobs in India, driven by continuous business expansion, the scaling up of fulfillment and delivery networks, and increased demand across related sectors like packaging, manufacturing, and transportation. Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets at Amazon, emphasized the company’s symbiotic growth with India’s digital aspirations, underscoring Amazon’s role in supporting the nation’s vision of a self-reliant and developed India.

In its long-term strategy, Amazon intends to democratize AI access throughout India, making AI tools accessible to businesses, consumers, and students. By 2030, the company aims to introduce AI benefits to 15 million small enterprises, with current sellers on Amazon.in already leveraging AI-driven tools such as Seller Assistant and advanced selling solutions. Additionally, Amazon plans to enhance user shopping experiences through AI-driven innovations like visual discovery using Lens AI, conversational shopping via Rufus, and multilingual interfaces to overcome literacy barriers.

Moreover, Amazon is committed to empowering 4 million government school students with AI education and career exploration, aligning with India’s National Education Policy 2020 through structured curriculum support, technology career tours, hands-on AI experiences, and teacher training. On the exports front, Amazon targets a quadrupling of cumulative e-commerce exports from India to $80 billion by 2030, a significant leap from the current $20 billion.

With the additional $35 billion investment commitment until 2030, Amazon aims to further accelerate India’s digital transformation, enhance logistics and technology infrastructure, drive innovation, and bolster its small business ecosystem. This announcement solidifies India as a crucial growth market for Amazon globally, amidst intensifying competition in e-commerce, cloud services, logistics, and AI-driven consumer offerings.
