President Trump announced on Friday that trade discussions between the United States and Canada will not resume. He mentioned that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had offered an apology for an anti-tariff advertisement that disrupted the negotiations. Trump expressed his fondness for Carney but criticized the commercial, labeling it as misleading.
The Canadian Prime Minister has yet to issue a response regarding the situation. Last week, Trump halted trade talks following the airing of an advertisement by the Canadian province of Ontario. The ad featured former President Ronald Reagan cautioning against the negative impact of tariffs, contradicting his historical support for free markets and trade.
In response, Trump increased tariffs on Canadian products by 10%. Via a social media post on October 24, Trump accused Canada of deceptively using Reagan’s words to influence a pending US Supreme Court case on tariffs. He claimed that the ad distorted Reagan’s true stance on trade and alleged Canadian interference in American affairs.
Trump’s social media post read, “CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!! They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY. Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country.”
