In a series of events in southern California, a tragic incident unfolded as a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy lost his life during a domestic violence call, leading to a high-speed chase reaching 150 miles per hour and a dramatic arrest.
Reportedly, the suspect, identified as a motorcyclist who allegedly shot Deputy Andrew Nunez, was apprehended after an off-duty deputy intervened by colliding with the motorcycle on the 210 Freeway in Upland, bringing the pursuit to a sudden stop.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus, in a press briefing, commended the off-duty deputy for his intervention, stating, “The pursuit concluded with the off-duty deputy sheriff’s legal action by impacting the suspect on the motorcycle.”
The incident began around 12:30 pm when law enforcement responded to a call regarding a man threatening a woman with a firearm in Rancho Cucamonga, approximately 47 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Upon arrival at the scene on Hollyhock Drive, the suspect immediately opened fire at the deputies.
Tragically, Deputy Nunez, a dedicated officer with six years of service and a young family, was fatally shot in the head during the exchange. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the violent encounter, a chaotic pursuit unfolded as the suspect fled on a motorcycle, reaching speeds exceeding 150 mph, with law enforcement in pursuit across freeways and city streets. Videos captured by witnesses showed the suspect maneuvering through traffic at dangerous speeds while being trailed by police units and California Highway Patrol.
The pursuit came to an end around 1:30 pm when the off-duty deputy, driving an unmarked sheriff’s department vehicle, intercepted the suspect on the eastbound 210 Freeway, causing the motorcycle to crash, and the suspect was apprehended by officers.
After receiving initial treatment at the scene, the suspect was airlifted to a hospital for further care. Law enforcement authorities indicated that once medically cleared, the suspect will likely face murder charges.
Sheriff Dicus praised Deputy Nunez as both a dedicated law enforcement officer and a loving father who had served the Rancho Cucamonga community diligently for five years.
