This gesture coincided with Thailand and Cambodia signing an extended ceasefire agreement, with Trump present at the ceremony. His earlier warnings of economic consequences contributed to persuading both nations to cease hostilities along their disputed border earlier this year.
The initial phase of the agreement involves Thailand releasing Cambodian prisoners while Cambodia starts withdrawing heavy artillery. The situation will be supervised by regional observers to prevent any resumption of conflict.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commended the development, stating that the efforts of the “President of Peace” have paved the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia. He acknowledged the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords by Cambodia and Thailand, thanking Trump’s leadership and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s collaboration.
The event marked Trump’s first appearance at the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur. His visit, including upcoming stops in Japan and South Korea and a potential meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, is viewed as an opportunity for Trump to enhance his reputation as an international dealmaker amidst ongoing trade tensions and domestic challenges.
Trump landed in Malaysia just before 2:00 a.m. GMT, engaging in his trademark campaign dance with local performers while displaying American and Malaysian flags. The summit provided him a new platform to promote global peace efforts, having attended ASEAN only once during his previous term.
Thailand and Cambodia encountered a severe five-day conflict in July, resulting in numerous casualties and displacing hundreds of thousands—marking the most intense clashes in recent history along their contested border. Trump’s threat to withhold trade agreements until the hostilities ceased played a crucial role in initiating negotiations. A fragile truce had been in place since then.
Following the expanded ceasefire, Trump also finalized separate economic agreements with Cambodia and Thailand, underscoring his dual role as a mediator for peace and trade in the region.
