Speculation Grows: RBI May Cut Repo Rate by 25 Basis Points

As the upcoming monetary policy announcement by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approaches, there is increasing speculation among economists that the central bank might opt for a 25 basis points reduction in the repo rate, bringing it down to 5.25%.

The possibility of a slight rate cut has gained traction due to persistently low inflation levels and robust economic expansion. The RBI is scheduled to conduct its monetary policy review from December 3 to December 5, with Governor Sanjay Malhotra slated to reveal the decision on December 5.

Many analysts argue that a 25 basis points decrease could provide a supportive boost to the economy during a period of subdued price pressures. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicates that retail inflation has consistently remained below the government’s comfort threshold.

Since February last year, the RBI has been gradually reducing rates, having already implemented a cumulative 100 basis points cut until it paused in August. Despite the low inflation, India’s economic growth has pleasantly surprised, registering an impressive 8.2% GDP growth in the second quarter, hitting a six-quarter high.

Pramod Kathuria, the founder and CEO of Easiloan, highlighted the cautious approach expected from the RBI in the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in December. While the easing inflation and stabilization of the macroeconomic environment advocate for a rate reduction, global uncertainties and the importance of maintaining financial stability will be carefully considered.

Kathuria suggested that a gradual decrease in rates could stimulate credit demand and enhance consumer confidence. However, any policy adjustments are likely to be moderate to ensure the trajectory towards disinflation remains on track.

With the MPC session just around the corner, both investors and borrowers are keenly observing the potential outcomes. A rate cut could lead to slightly cheaper loans, but the RBI may opt to wait for clearer economic signals before further easing monetary policy.
