Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has disclosed that Sean Williams is contending with a substance abuse issue, leading to his exclusion from future consideration for the national team. Williams, a former Zimbabwe team member, recently opted out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025 just before the tournament in Harare.
The cricket board stated that Williams has voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program. The 39-year-old chose to make himself unavailable for selection due to potential anti-doping testing and admitted to struggling with a substance addiction during an internal inquiry.
ZC expressed disappointment over Williams’ decision to withdraw from national selection on the verge of a crucial event like the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025 in Harare amid potential anti-doping testing. Following an investigation into his unavailability, Williams revealed his battle with substance addiction and voluntarily enrolled in a rehabilitation program. ZC emphasized the importance of all contracted players maintaining high levels of professionalism, discipline, adherence to team protocols, and anti-doping regulations.
Citing a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability in Williams’ record, which has hindered the team’s preparations, ZC praised his decision to seek rehabilitation but deemed it impractical to extend his national contract beyond the current year. Despite acknowledging Williams’ commitment to rehabilitation, ZC raised concerns about his withdrawal from team commitments in circumstances involving potential testing, citing serious doubts about his professional and ethical standards. Consequently, ZC decided to exclude Williams from future national team selections.
ZC expressed gratitude for Williams’ significant contributions to Zimbabwean cricket throughout the past two decades. Williams, who debuted for Zimbabwe in 2005, has participated in 24 Tests, 164 ODIs, and 85 T20Is.
