Apple’s renowned design expert, Alan Dye, known for his work on the elegant Liquid Glass interface, is departing the company after nearly 20 years to assume the role of Chief Design Officer at Meta. This move, set to commence on December 31, signifies a significant transition between the design realms of Silicon Valley’s leading giants. At Meta, Dye will head a newly established design studio tasked with shaping both hardware and software experiences, with a specific emphasis on AI-driven headsets and smart glasses crucial to Meta’s advancement in augmented and mixed reality technologies.
Having joined Apple in 2006, Dye initially served as a creative director in marketing before delving into interface design. His pivotal contributions include the transformational visual shift brought about by iOS 7 under Jony Ive’s design group. Dye later took charge of Apple’s user interface design team, overseeing the visual progression of various operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. Notably, his recent work on the Vision Pro’s interface and the Liquid Glass design update for iOS 26 and macOS 26 highlighted his role in enhancing Apple’s user experience.
With Dye’s departure, Apple has appointed Stephen Lemay, a seasoned designer integral to Apple’s design legacy since 1999, as his successor. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, commended Lemay’s exceptional design contributions and emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and collaboration in design. Lemay’s focus will be on maintaining Apple’s tradition of blending technical sophistication with visual simplicity amidst the company’s expansion into spatial computing and AI-driven experiences.
Meanwhile, Meta aims to leverage Dye’s expertise to enhance its hardware design direction as it ventures beyond social media into immersive technologies. Dye’s appointment signals Meta’s ambition to unify the look and usability of its product ecosystem akin to Apple’s established design principles. His deep expertise in user experience and cross-platform design is expected to be crucial as Meta refines its hardware offerings and competes with Apple’s Vision Pro line.
As Apple and Meta navigate their respective design landscapes under Lemay and Dye, the tech industry witnesses a symbolic shift in design philosophy from Apple’s precision to Meta’s innovation. This move not only marks a career transition for Dye but also signifies a broader shift in the approach to design in the technology sector, hinting at potential interface revolutions on the horizon.
