Jonathan Trott’s tenure as Afghanistan’s head coach is scheduled to conclude after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Monday. This decision aligns with the board’s strategic vision for the team’s future growth phase, marking the end of a transformative period for Afghan cricket.
Since assuming the role in 2022, Trott has significantly elevated Afghanistan’s performance, leading the team to notable victories against top cricketing nations such as England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The team’s historic advancement to the T20 World Cup semifinals in 2024 underscored their progress under Trott’s guidance. Additionally, Afghanistan secured ODI series wins over South Africa and Bangladesh, shifting their narrative from underdogs to consistently competitive contenders.
Trott’s coaching prowess was evident in Afghanistan’s recent T20I series sweep against Zimbabwe. Despite some challenges, including reported communication issues with the ACB, which were later resolved, Trott expressed pride and appreciation for his time with the national team. He commended the players’ dedication and spirit, emphasizing his support for Afghan cricket’s future endeavors.
ACB CEO Naseeb Khan lauded Trott for shaping Afghanistan’s confident identity on the global cricketing stage, emphasizing his role in fostering player development and competitiveness. As Afghanistan prepares for a coaching transition post-2026 T20 World Cup, Trott’s impact in refining the team’s skills and mindset to compete at the highest level is acknowledged.
In line with organizational changes, batting coach Andrew Puttick will also depart upon contract completion this year, paving the way for a revamped coaching structure. Meanwhile, Trott is slated to lead the Gulf Giants in the upcoming ILT20 season, commencing on December 2, ensuring his continued involvement in cricket coaching beyond his tenure with Afghanistan.
