R Ashwin Withdraws from Big Bash League 15

Indian cricketer R Ashwin has pulled out of the upcoming Big Bash League 15 due to a knee injury sustained during training in Chennai. Ashwin, who was all set to be the first male player from India to participate in the BBL, made this announcement via a social media post on Tuesday.

Ashwin had signed up to represent the Sydney Thunder for the entire duration of BBL 15, commencing on December 14. However, he indicated a possibility of rejoining the team later in the season, running until January 25, 2026, provided his recovery progresses as expected from his recent injury and subsequent surgery.

The off-spinner shared that he had undergone a surgical procedure for his knee injury and has been focusing on his rehabilitation ever since. Despite not specifying the exact timing of the injury or the surgery, Ashwin expressed disappointment at missing out on BBL/15. He expressed gratitude towards the club and fans for their support and warmth during his time with them.

While expressing his commitment to support the team from afar, Ashwin mentioned the prospect of returning later in the season if his recovery aligns with the travel schedule and receives medical clearance. However, he clarified that no promises could be made at this stage.

Ashwin, who retired from international cricket midway through India’s tour of Australia last year, had recently bid farewell to the IPL as well. He had shown keen interest in featuring in the Big Bash League as part of his ambition to play in various international leagues. Despite initially entering the auction pool for the ILT20 in the UAE, Ashwin withdrew after not being picked in the first round.

Due to his injury, Ashwin will also miss the Hong Kong Sixes tournament where he was slated to represent India under Dinesh Karthik’s leadership from November 7 to 9. This setback comes as a disappointment for Ashwin, who was looking forward to showcasing his skills in different cricketing platforms.

The announcement of Ashwin’s withdrawal has put a temporary halt to his plans of participating in the Big Bash League, with hopes pinned on a strong recovery and a potential return later in the season, subject to medical clearance.
