The USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier strike group, one of the United States’ formidable naval assets, is being deployed to the Caribbean as part of an escalating military presence in Latin America. This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump’s efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region and increase pressure on the Nicols Maduro regime in Venezuela.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the repositioning of the Gerald R Ford Carrier Strike Group, currently stationed in Europe, to the area under the jurisdiction of the US Southern Command. This region encompasses the Caribbean Sea, Central and South America, and adjacent waters. The carrier group, accompanied by its air wing, aims to bolster the US force presence to counter illicit actors and activities that pose threats to the stability and security of the Western Hemisphere.
Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell has confirmed the redeployment, emphasizing the group’s mission to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and combat narco-terrorism.
The USS Gerald R Ford, a cutting-edge supercarrier and the largest warship ever constructed, will join eight other US naval vessels already operating in the area. This fleet includes destroyers, a cruiser, a littoral combat ship, an amphibious assault ship, and two transport ships.
The USS Gerald R Ford, which recently stopped near Split, Croatia, on October 21, will take several days to reach its operational position in the Caribbean. Commissioned in 2017, this nuclear-powered carrier boasts impressive specifications, measuring over 1,100 feet long, displacing 100,000 tons, and capable of speeds up to 34.5 miles per hour, as per the US Navy.
While the Pentagon emphasizes that the military buildup is part of an ongoing anti-drug campaign, speculations suggest that President Trump is contemplating potential strikes within Venezuela to weaken Nicols Maduro’s grip on power. Reports indicate that senior administration officials have discussed limited military options against Venezuelan targets as part of the White House’s broader pressure tactics.
In a recent announcement, Hegseth disclosed that the US conducted an overnight strike on a vessel linked to a drug cartel engaged in narcotics smuggling in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. This marked the tenth strike in the operation since its commencement last month, with the total casualties reaching 43.
Although Venezuela’s government has not officially responded to the deployment, Caracas has consistently accused Washington of utilizing anti-narcotics operations as a guise for intervention.
