US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, citing a “fraudulent” advertisement that featured former President Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs. Trump made the declaration on Truth Social, stating that due to Canada’s “egregious behavior,” all trade discussions were now ceased.
This move has escalated trade tensions between the two countries, following Trump’s recent meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House. Trump had previously imposed significant tariffs on Canadian imports, including 35% tariffs overall and specific tariffs of 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles, prompting retaliatory actions from Ottawa.
Goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) negotiated during Trump’s first term were exempt from these tariffs. Both sides had been engaged in talks for weeks regarding potential sectoral agreements, notably focusing on steel and aluminum, before the sudden halt in negotiations.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney warned that Ottawa would not allow unfair US market access if negotiations collapsed. The optimism that had briefly characterized US-Canada relations recently took a downturn, with Trump expressing displeasure over Canada’s critical advertisement regarding US levies, featuring Reagan cautioning against tariffs.
Carney acknowledged that a comprehensive trade deal with the Trump administration was no longer feasible, with discussions on lifting the 25% automobile tariff likely postponed until the next USMCA review in the following year. As Carney prepares for a trip to Asia, including a meeting with Trump, the future of trade relations between the US and Canada remains uncertain.
