“UIDAI Set to Launch Mobile Number Update Feature”

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is gearing up to introduce a convenient new feature for the Aadhaar app, enabling users to update their mobile numbers directly from their smartphones. Once this feature is launched, individuals will have the ability to modify the mobile number associated with their Aadhaar card without the need to visit an enrolment center, complete paperwork, or wait in queues.

In a recent announcement by UIDAI, it was revealed that users will soon have the option to update their mobile numbers securely from home through digital verification methods. This forthcoming feature will utilize OTP verification and face authentication via the Aadhaar app to verify a user’s identity. UIDAI shared this update on its official platform, stating, “Coming Soon! Update mobile number in Aadhaar from the comfort of your home — through OTP & Face Authentication.”

This enhancement will significantly improve the current process, which currently requires individuals to physically visit an authorized center to update their Aadhaar-linked mobile number due to the stringent verification procedures. For many, particularly senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those residing in remote areas, the existing method has been cumbersome and time-consuming, often involving long waits or limited appointment availability. By introducing this new feature, UIDAI aims to simplify the process by transferring it entirely to users’ smartphones, making a crucial identity update more accessible.

The system will authenticate users by sending an OTP to their current or new mobile number, followed by a face authentication step using the Aadhaar app’s built-in verification tools. This two-step authentication process is designed to ensure high security levels while providing a seamless and user-friendly experience. UIDAI emphasized that this upgrade eliminates the need for physical documentation or visits to centers, stating in its announcement, “No more standing in the queue at the Aadhaar Centre.”

Although the home-update feature is not yet live, UIDAI has confirmed that it will be rolled out soon and advises users to stay updated for further information. In preparation for the launch, users are encouraged to download the Aadhaar app in advance, available on both Android and iOS platforms. Once the feature is live, users will be able to update their mobile numbers within the app using their Aadhaar number, the new mobile number, and a smartphone supporting face authentication.
