A man of Indian descent, aged 39, has been taken into custody by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of committing “grand larceny.” Allegations against Mehul Goswami suggest that he misused his role as a remote worker at the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) while concurrently holding a full-time position in Malta. This purportedly led to the embezzlement of over $50,000 (roughly Rs 44 lakh) in state funds.
Goswami faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison after being formally accused of grand larceny in the second degree. The New York State Inspector General’s Offices have highlighted that Goswami’s simultaneous employment breached state rules and misappropriated taxpayer resources.
In response to the alleged transgression, Inspector General Lucy Lang remarked on the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that public servants are entrusted with the duty to act with integrity, making Goswami’s actions a significant betrayal of that trust.
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office detained Goswami on October 15 for grand larceny in the second degree, categorized as a class C felony, as per CBS 6. Notably, the updated law in New York does not permit bail for charges similar to those faced by Goswami.
The investigation into this matter was a joint effort between the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office. It underscores the ongoing dedication of state entities to maintain accountability and ethical standards in public service.
Inspector General Lang expressed appreciation for the collaborative work with law enforcement agencies, highlighting the significance of cooperation in resolving cases successfully in court. Goswami, identified as a project coordinator for the state, reportedly received a salary of $117,891 in 2024, as per SeethroughNY, a platform that monitors government employees’ salaries in New York, mentioned in a report by the Times Union newspaper.
