More than 1,000 Amazon employees have raised concerns publicly to the company’s top executives, including Andy Jassy and the S-team, warning about potential severe consequences of the company’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence. The employees, organized by the activist group Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ), have penned an open letter titled “Join 1,000+ Amazon employees & 2,000+ solidarity signers demanding a responsible rollout of AI.”
To date, the letter has garnered signatures from over 1,039 Amazon employees and more than 2,436 individuals outside the company. The signatories encompass various roles within the organization, such as senior engineers, managers, scientists, designers, logistics workers, and marketing professionals. They are advocating for a more cautious approach to the rapid deployment of AI technologies, expressing concerns that the current accelerated implementation focusing on profit and automation could compromise ethics, sustainability, and human well-being.
In the letter, employees highlight the risks associated with the company’s current strategy, emphasizing the potential negative impacts on democratic institutions, the acceleration of climate change, and job losses due to aggressive automation. The employees urge Amazon to establish ethical AI working groups that include non-managerial staff to ensure a more inclusive decision-making process in the development and deployment of AI technologies. Additionally, they demand transparency regarding the effects of AI tools on workloads, career paths, and working conditions.
The employees’ plea comes at a challenging time for Amazon, with reports indicating the elimination of approximately 14,000 jobs as part of ongoing cost-saving and automation initiatives. CEO Andy Jassy has emphasized the importance of AI in Amazon’s future, suggesting that new AI agents will optimize operations and potentially reduce the need for many existing positions. However, this messaging has exacerbated concerns among employees that generative AI may not only reshape their roles but also lead to their displacement. There are worries that the environmental footprint of Amazon’s expanding data centers, which have seen a 35% increase in emissions since 2019 despite commitments to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040, is being overlooked in favor of AI development.
Through their letter, Amazon employees aim to initiate a broader dialogue on the social and environmental implications of corporate AI advancement, not only within Amazon but also across the tech industry. They emphasize the importance of building a better world through AI advancements that prioritize societal well-being over profit, advocating for a future where technological progress fosters freedom, environmental stewardship, and human flourishing.
