Ashwin Slams Gambhir: Arshdeep Singh Deserves T20 Spot

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management for not including Arshdeep Singh in recent T20I squads. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, expressed disbelief at the continued absence of India’s top left-arm pacer despite his impressive performance record in the T20 format.

Arshdeep has emerged as one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers in T20 cricket over the years. He currently holds the title of India’s leading wicket-taker in the T20 format and is the first Indian bowler to surpass the 100-wicket milestone. His exceptional display at the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker and played a pivotal role in India’s championship victory, has further solidified his credentials.

However, since Gambhir assumed the role of head coach, Arshdeep has struggled to secure a spot in the playing XI. During the second T20I against Australia in Melbourne, India opted for a spin-oriented lineup and selected Harshit Rana over Arshdeep, a decision that raised eyebrows.

Ashwin did not hold back in his critique, stating, “Arshdeep’s name should be right after Jasprit Bumrah. If Bumrah is unavailable, then Arshdeep Singh should be the first bowler on that list.” He expressed bewilderment at Arshdeep’s repeated exclusions from the playing eleven, emphasizing that his stellar performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup should have guaranteed his position.

The veteran off-spinner also emphasized the detrimental impact extended periods on the bench can have on a player’s form and confidence. Ashwin highlighted, “He has spent so much time on the bench that he appeared rusty when he returned to bowl in the Asia Cup. Even a top bowler can lose their edge if they are not given playing opportunities.”

According to Ashwin, the issue is not about comparing players but about acknowledging merit. He asserted, “This is not about Harshit Rana or anyone else. It is about Arshdeep Singh and his rightful place in the team. He belongs in the starting XI and should be a regular feature.”

As India explores new combinations under fresh management, Ashwin’s sentiments resonate with a growing chorus of fans who believe that talents like Arshdeep Singh should not be overlooked and left on the sidelines.
