“India Faces Australia in T20I Opener sans Pandya”

India is gearing up to face Australia in the initial T20I of a five-match series on Wednesday, October 29 at Manuka Oval, Canberra. Coming off a victory in the Asia Cup, India will confront a strong Australian team on their home turf. This will mark the first tour for captain Suryakumar Yadav in Australia, where he has maintained an unbeaten record in series under his leadership so far.

However, in this upcoming series, Suryakumar will be without his key all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, who is sidelined due to injury. This absence will significantly impact India’s team composition, necessitating two players to compensate for Pandya’s versatile skills.

Typically fielding eight batting options, India might have to adjust their strategy with seven batters and six bowling choices due to Pandya’s unavailability. With Pandya out, all-rounders Shivam Dube and Nitish Reddy will need to step up and fill the void.

The team management faces a dilemma as Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are both potent wicket-takers in T20Is. Having already faced consequences for dropping Kuldeep in the ODI series, India cannot afford to sideline him again, given his exceptional performance in the recent Asia Cup.

On the flip side, Varun Chakravarthy has been in superb form since his return to international cricket in October 2024, ranking as the second-highest wicket-taker among full member nations with 38 wickets from 18 innings.

Looking ahead to the first T20I, captain Suryakumar Yadav has hinted at maintaining their usual three-spin attack. However, the absence of Pandya raises questions about India’s batting depth, potentially prompting a shift in their strategy.

Projected India XI for the 1st T20I: Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakrvarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh
