Indian Cricketer Shreyas Iyer Stable After Spleen Injury

Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer, serving as the vice-captain in One Day Internationals (ODIs), is in a stable condition and undergoing recovery at a hospital in Sydney. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development after diagnostic scans revealed a spleen laceration injury. This update comes subsequent to earlier reports indicating Iyer’s admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to internal bleeding following an incident during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25.

The injury occurred when Iyer sustained an impact to his left lower rib cage while fielding. He was promptly transported to the hospital for further assessment after the match. The BCCI issued an official statement detailing the circumstances of the injury and subsequent treatment. According to the statement, the medical scans disclosed the spleen laceration, and Iyer is currently receiving medical care, showing stable progress in recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in collaboration with medical specialists in Sydney and India, is actively monitoring his condition.

The Indian team management has confirmed that the team doctor will continue to oversee Iyer’s recovery progress in Sydney before a decision is made regarding his return to India. Reports from PTI news agency revealed that Iyer was kept under observation as a precautionary measure upon detection of internal bleeding. The 31-year-old cricketer sustained the injury while executing a remarkable catch to dismiss Alex Carey, displaying signs of discomfort thereafter. His swift transfer to the hospital was deemed necessary as his vital signs were reportedly fluctuating.

Initially anticipated to be out of action for approximately three weeks, Iyer’s return timeline hinges on the pace of his recovery and further medical evaluations. Iyer was recently appointed vice-captain of the Indian ODI team, with the Australia series being his inaugural assignment as the deputy to Shubman Gill. Notably, he had taken a break from red-ball cricket to manage his workload due to recurring back injury concerns that have impeded his progress in top-tier cricket.
