India’s World Cup Opener Doubtful for Semi vs. Australia

India’s Women’s World Cup team is facing a setback ahead of their semi-final clash against Australia as opener Pratika Rawal is likely to miss the match due to an ankle injury. Rawal sustained the injury during the final league game against Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai. Reports suggest that she may not be fit in time for the crucial semi-final against Australia.

The injury occurred in the 21st over of Bangladesh’s innings when Rawal’s foot twisted awkwardly while fielding near the boundary. Despite initial fears, Rawal managed to walk off the field with assistance after scans at the venue revealed significant swelling in her right ankle. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not released an official statement, but early signs indicate that the 25-year-old might not recover in time for the semi-final.

Rawal’s absence would be a significant blow to India as she has been a key player in the tournament, scoring 308 runs in six matches. Her partnership with Smriti Mandhana has been crucial for India’s success, making her absence even more concerning. With no designated backup opener in the squad, India may need to rethink their batting order, possibly turning to players like Harleen Deol or Jemimah Rodrigues.

If Rawal is officially ruled out, India could consider bringing in a reserve player like Tejal Hasabnis, Prema Rawat, Priya Mishra, Minnu Mani, or Sayali Satghare as a replacement. However, this decision would also mean that Rawal would miss out on a potential appearance in the final, even if she recovers in time.

The team management faces a challenging selection dilemma ahead of the semi-final, with the match scheduled for October 30.
