“Former Japanese PM Tomiichi Murayama Dies at 101”

Tomiichi Murayama, the former prime minister of Japan who famously issued an apology for World War II in 1995, passed away at the age of 101 in Oita City. The news of his death was confirmed by Mizuho Fukushima, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, stating that Murayama, considered the “father of Japanese politics,” died at a hospital in Oita City at 11:28 am.

According to Hiroyuki Takano, the secretary general of the Social Democratic Party in Oita, Murayama’s death was attributed to old age. Murayama served as prime minister between 1994 and 1996, facing major crises such as the 1995 Kobe earthquake and the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack. He gained global recognition for his significant statement released in 1995, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.

In this historic declaration, Murayama acknowledged Japan’s past colonial rule and aggression, acknowledging the immense suffering inflicted on various countries, especially in Asia. He expressed deep remorse and offered a heartfelt apology, setting a precedent for subsequent Japanese prime ministers to follow suit on war anniversaries. Prior to his political career, Murayama was drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army in 1944 while still a university student, describing the military experience as oppressive and restrictive.

Leading a coalition government with the Liberal Democratic Party, Japan’s leading postwar political entity, Murayama’s tenure was defined by his pivotal 1995 statement. This statement not only shaped Japan’s official wartime apologies but also played a crucial role in the country’s post-war diplomacy.
