Ex-US Ambassador: Trump jeopardizes US-India ties

Former US Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, has accused President Donald Trump of undoing years of bipartisan diplomatic progress with India. Emanuel alleged that Trump’s actions were driven by ego and financial interests from Pakistan. He criticized the President for neglecting the strategic relationship with India, which serves as a crucial counterbalance to China.

Emanuel, who previously served as White House chief of staff and Mayor of Chicago, highlighted the deterioration of relations with India during an interview. He pointed out that the decline started when Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not endorse Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Emanuel suggested that Trump’s motivations were influenced by personal ego and financial connections to Pakistan.

Characterizing the situation as a significant strategic error, Emanuel cautioned that China has capitalized on the US administration’s missteps. He emphasized China’s expanding presence in the Indian Ocean and the escalation of tariffs on American goods. Despite facing substantial US tariffs, India resolved a border conflict with Pakistan through direct military talks, with Islamabad crediting Trump for facilitating the truce and even proposing him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025.
