“X Platform Introduces Handle Marketplace for Inactive Usernames”

Elon Musk’s social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is introducing a new feature that allows users to acquire old inactive usernames on the platform. While some usernames can be claimed upon request, X has stated that certain handles will be distributed based on merit.

A new X Handle Marketplace account has been launched on the app to facilitate this process. According to the platform, the marketplace will reassign handles that are no longer actively used but are still associated with old accounts.

This service will be exclusive to X Premium Plus and X Premium Business users, offering both free and paid usernames to subscribers.

The usernames available for purchase are categorized as Priority and Rare. Priority handles consist of full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations like @GabrielJones and @PizzaEater. Users with Premium Plus or Premium Business accounts can request a Priority username for free, with approval typically granted within three business days. If the request is denied, users can submit a new request for a different username. If a user downgrades or cancels their subscription, the old handle will revert to the account after a 30-day grace period.

Rare handles encompass short, generic, or culturally significant names such as @Pizza and @Tom. Acquiring Rare usernames is more complex, as X will either sell them at a set price to invite-only users or allocate them based on merit. Users who obtain a Rare handle through this method can retain it even if they cancel their subscription, creating a new revenue stream for the platform.

X will evaluate merit based on a user’s past contributions, intentions for the new username, and their influence on the platform. However, specific details on this process have not yet been disclosed.

It’s important to note that acquired usernames cannot be transferred to another user, and users can suggest usernames that are currently unavailable.
