White House Criticizes Nobel Committee for Trump Snub

Hours after Maria Corino Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025, the White House criticized the Nobel Committee for not recognizing Donald Trump. Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Trump’s peace efforts, stating that Trump “does a lot for peace,” according to Reuters.

Putin commended Trump on Friday for his efforts to promote peace, particularly citing the recent ceasefire in the Middle East. However, Putin refrained from passing judgment on whether Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.

Acknowledging Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, Putin mentioned that if successful, it would be a significant historical achievement.

The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize winner coincided with the Israeli Defense Forces declaring the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, part of Trump’s 20-point peace plan, coming into effect.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Trump, stating that “Trump deserves it” in a tweet from his official handle, emphasizing Trump’s role in making peace a reality.

The White House criticized the Nobel Committee for awarding the prize to Machado, accusing the panel of prioritizing politics over peace. White House spokesperson Steven Cheung highlighted Trump’s efforts in making peace deals and saving lives.

In a briefing, Trump mentioned his achievements in brokering peace in Gaza and ending wars, but clarified that he was not driven by a desire for awards. He expressed frustration over Barack Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize early in his presidency.

Prior to Putin and Netanyahu, Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif openly supported Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

The IDF announced the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas taking effect, marking the beginning of the Gaza peace plan’s implementation with both parties agreeing to the terms of the first phase.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 was awarded to Maria Corina Machado for her dedication to promoting democratic rights and advocating for a peaceful transition in Venezuela. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her as a unifying force in Venezuela’s opposition, praising her relentless efforts despite facing threats and hiding. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes emphasized the importance of honoring individuals who stand up for freedom in oppressive regimes.
