“Tsunami Warnings Retracted After 7.8 Magnitude Quake”

Emergency authorities retracted tsunami warnings shortly after issuing them in response to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hitting the Drake Passage, a waterway between southern South America and Antarctica. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and Chile’s SHOA marine authority had initially issued alerts but rescinded them about an hour later. Chilean officials had specifically cautioned about potential effects on their military bases in Prat, O’Higgins, and Cape Horn. The earthquake occurred around 5:30 p.m. local time and the tsunami alerts were lifted within an hour. Due to the deep waters and harsh conditions in the Drake Passage, the risk of significant tsunami waves reaching land was low.
